Gutter ice can wreak havoc on the gutters and roof of your home. Its weight can pull gutters off the roof and the melting can push water into your home damaging paint, drywall and more. Bottom line: it’s not good.
Mario Brothers Home Improvement can offer a few tips to help reduce or prevent gutter ice from forming.
Before Winter:
- Clean Gutters – One of the first lines of defense is a clean gutter. In the fall when the leaves have finally fallen, head up and clean out those gutters.
- Insulation – A well-insulated attic will help keep the heat inside the house and reduce the risk of it rising to the roof and melting the lowest layer of snow which turns to water then freezes.
During Winter:
- Clean Roof – If you can get a roof rake, these are great at removing snow and thus reducing the risk of ice dams.
- Warm Water – Sometimes spraying some warm water from a hose can turn that ice into water and help it off the roof. This is tricky because it could very well freeze again and falling ice is always dangerous. So be cautious if you go this route.
