There is a good chance you are not an electrician. Even still, it is extremely important you know whether or not your home is up to code when it comes to your home’s electrical system. Electrical codes are there for one reason and that is to protect you and your family. If your home isn’t up to code, that means you are at risk of having an electrical fire which could seriously injure someone and cause extensive property damage.
If you don’t know what to look for, keep reading. Below you will find a quick list of safety measures you should adhere to in one of the most important rooms in the home.
The Kitchen
Generally speaking the kitchen is full of electrical appliances. You have a dishwasher, microwave, garbage disposal, refrigerator, toaster, and so much more. With so many electrical appliances, many of which are often used at the same time, you need to make sure there is a separate circuit for every appliance that is motor powered.
You also need to make sure you have at least two receptacle circuits above your counter tops. These circuits are for plugging in things such as a microwave. There should be a dedicated 240 volt circuit for all electric ranges, ovens, and cooktops.
If you notice your kitchen is void of these features, call an electrician immediately to have things rewired. Doing so will make your home a lot safer and prevent power outages when multiple appliances are plugged in at the same time.
Hiring an electrician can be quite expensive if there is a lot of work that needs to be done. If you haven’t been in the home for very long, look at your warranty to see what’s covered. You should also contact the builder to let them know what’s going on.
