Sumpter Township, Michigan
Sumpter Township is a large community at the southwest corner of Wayne County encompassing 37.6 square miles but has a population of only about 10,000. Located just south of Belleville and west of Brownstown Township, Sumpter Township is a fairly rural community that offers a little more breathing room while still being fairly close to Ann Arbor, Detroit and the Detroit Metropolitan Airport. For those who enjoy the outdoors, farming communities and rural landscapes, Sumpter Township is the place to call home.
When you drive through a place like Sumpter Township, you’re apt to see a diverse population taking pride in the woodlands, wetlands and prairies where you can purchase fresh farm products on stands on the side of the road. You’re only 45 minutes from the heart of downtown Detroit but Sumpter Township feels little more like country living. There are Metroparks to enjoy just to the east which include the Lower Huron, Willow and Oakwoods Metroparks as well as Crosswinds Marsh which is a 1,000 acre wetland with hiking, biking, cross-country skiing and horseback riding trails.
